A day we smiled, kept under glass,
a moment that we won't let pass.
Look behind that favourite view,
I've left another clue for you.
Answer: Behind the photo frame
Film nights, popcorn, two cold feet,
I'm shared (or stolen) on the seat.
Unfold me where we like to stay,
a clue is wrapped in me today.
Answer: Sofa blanket
Splattered pages, corners bent,
on dinners that were heaven-sent.
(And one or two that went quite wrong.)
The clue's inside, it won't take long.
Answer: Cookbook
How to set up a Christmas scavenger hunt for your boyfriend or girlfriend
The Partner edition is written in the first person, from you to them: "there's a note from me", "That jumper that I love on you". It does not assume a gender, so it reads the same for a boyfriend, a girlfriend, a husband or a wife. The clues point to the small routines of a shared home: the morning coffee, the blanket that gets shared (or stolen), the book by the bed.
- Open the Partner file in a web browser, print it and cut along the dashed lines. The cards are laid out four per sheet.
- Keep card 1. Hide card 2 at the place card 1 points to, card 3 at the place card 2 points to, and so on. The answer key lists all 24 places in order.
- Put the present under the Christmas tree, which is where card 24 leads.
- Hand over card 1 at breakfast, or leave it on the doormat for when they come home.
Small things to leave along the way
The cards alone make a hunt. A few small extras at some of the stops make it a better one:
- Behind the photo frame: a printed photo from this year.
- In the tea tin: a box of their favourite tea.
- In the suitcase: a printed booking for a weekend away.
- Inside the slippers: a new pair of warm socks.
- In the cookbook: a note marking the recipe you will cook for them.
Hiding places in this edition
Other places the clues point to: under their pillow, the wine glass cupboard, the bathrobe pocket, under the key bowl, the spice rack, under the speaker, the bathroom cabinet, a winter coat pocket, the top dresser drawer, beside the houseplant, inside the laptop lid, the hallway mirror, the bath and the wardrobe.
If you do not live together
The clues describe a home you both know. If you live apart, set the hunt up in the home where you will spend Christmas, and leave out the cards that do not fit. Use the four blank cards for clues of your own, the kind only the two of you would understand. Twelve cards is enough for an evening; all 24 also work as one card a day from 1 to 24 December.
Safety
Two rhymes name the coffee machine and the fridge. Put those cards on the outside: beside the machine when it is switched off and cool, and on the fridge door. Never hide a card inside an appliance, or in or on anything that is hot or running.
What is in the $9 pack
One payment of $9 (USD) gets all six editions. It is a digital download: nothing is shipped, and you print the cards at home.
- 6 print-ready HTML files, one per edition: Kids 4-7, Kids 8-12, Teens, Partner, Grandparents, and Family (all ages). Each file is a web page that you open in a web browser and print from there.
- 24 printable clue cards in each edition, numbered 1 to 24 and laid out 4 per sheet with dashed cut lines.
- 4 blank cards in each edition for writing your own clues.
- An answer key in each edition: the clue number, the hiding place it points to, and what to hide there.
- A cover, a how-to-play section and a safety note in each edition.
- A README text file: what is in the pack, how to print, two ways to play, and safety notes.
The name is added by hand. The cover and every card carry a blank "For:" line: print first, then write the name with a pen.
Each edition is laid out for 10 sheets of A4 or US Letter paper. That layout was not test-printed. If a sheet of cards spills onto an extra page, set the print scale to 95%.
The clues are in English. Black-and-white printing is fine.
